How to Reinvent Yourself and Start a New Career

You can’t just start a new career without having a plan. And the first step of that plan is determining what, exactly, you want your new career to be. This will require some serious self-reflection. Do some soul-searching and figure out what it is you’re passionate about. Once you have a better idea of what it is you want to do, you can begin taking the necessary steps to make your dream a reality.

Get Educated

Once you know what you want to do, chances are you’re going to need some additional education or training to qualify for the position you desire. You may need to go back to school and get a degree or certification in your field of choice. Or, depending on the field you’ve chosen, you may be able to get by taking some classes or getting on-the-job training. Regardless of the route you take, getting educated will be an important step in starting your new career.

Build Your Experience

If you don’t have any experience in the field you’ve chosen, that’s not necessarily a deal breaker—but it will require some extra effort on your part. There are a few ways you can go about building up your experience. You could volunteer for relevant organizations to gain experience and connections within your industry. You could also look for internships or entry-level positions with companies that interest you. Getting your foot in the door is half the battle—once you have some experience under your belt, advancing in your career will be much easier.

Starting a new career can be a daunting task—but it’s not impossible. By following these steps, you can give yourself the best possible chance at success. First, determine what it is you want to do.
